Michigan Sting Senior Hockey Team Wins 2012 CARHA World Cup
Congratulations to captain Billy Mack and his band of 60+ Recreation guys that earned a World Cup title in the 2012 CARHA World Cup Tournament held March 4 -11 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The Sting defeated Cornwall Hubs (Ontario), 2-1, in the championship game with Dave Wahl scoring both goals.
The Sting 50+ Elite and 60+ Elite teams each reached championship games in their divisions before falling in a shootout. The 55+ Recreational team earned a semifinal berth before bowing out to Les Boys of New Brunswick.
The Michigan Sting Hockey Club had earned World Cup titles in the 50+ Division in 2004 in Ottawa and the 60+ Elite Division in 2008 in Quebec City. Both of those teams were captained by current club president Terry Boyette.
“The Michigan Sting organization did a great job in this tournament,” Boyette said. “All four of our teams made it to the semifinals and three of them made it to the dance. One gold and two silvers is not bad for a bunch of old beer league guys from Michigan.”
The CARHA (Canadian Adult Recreation Hockey Association) World Cup has been labeled the "Olympics" of recreational hockey and since its inception it has grown to be the largest international adult recreation hockey tournament in the world. This year, 120 teams from 13 countries participated including teams from five provinces of Canada, United States, England, Scotland, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, and Slovenia.
The world renowned CARHA Hockey World Cup is organized every four years in a select Canadian city. Joining Sault Ste. Marie this year are past hosts Toronto (1996), Vancouver (2000), Ottawa (2004), and Quebec City (2008).
Terry Herbert (a.k.a. "Capt Hook") coached World Cup Gold Medal Michigan Sting victories to the 2004 Ottawa 50+ and 2008 Quebec City 60 + Team.
The Sting 60+ Rec team opened the tourney with a 5-1 win over Les Etchemins (Quebec) and then defeated the Gravel Merchants (Ontario), 3-1. After earning a bye after pool play, the Sting trounced the Gravel Merchants, 5-0, in the semifinal. Goalie Bob Mudloff posted one shutout and surrendered three goals as the offense poured in 15 goals in four games. This championship is the third consecutive World Cup victory for Mudloff who backstopped the 50+ team at Ottawa in 2004 and the 60+ Elite squad at Quebec City in 2008.
The 60+ Rec was again powered by its Nova Scotia “five” contingent that has become an integral part of the Sting tournament team since the 2005 Senior Olympics in Minnesota. Don Bauld led the team in scoring with five goals and two assists as the Sting sailed through pool play with a perfect 3-0 record. Forwards Mike Salyzyn (2-4), Ernie Johnson (2-2), and Bill Boyd (1-3) contributed to the offense and defenseman John Cochrane (0-1) added a helper.
Team members included Bill Mack, Alex Luttschyn, Dave Wahl, Frank Migda, William Bradford, John Nasuti, Rich Anderson, Sam Cupp, Tim O’Dea, John DeBrincat, Joe Gerbino, Don Bauld, Mike Salyzyn, Ernie Johnson, Bill Boyd, John Cochrane, and managers Phil Parrinello and Rick Chauvin.
Other Sting teams enjoyed success in the Elite divisions as the 50+ team rallied back from a 2-0 deficit before falling, 3-2, to AK Bars from Russia. The defending World Cup Champion Sting 60+ Elite team succumbed, 2-1, to Les Veterans de Beauce (Quebec) in a shootout.
The Sting 50+ Elites won pool play games against Hammarby Oldtimers (Sweden), Soo Senior Greyhounds (Ontario), and the Marconi Club (Ontario). Randy Aimoe and Stan Delabbio scored goals in the championship game.
Chris Delabbio led the Sting 50+ with five goals and four assists, including the hattrick against the Soo, as he was the only non-Russian player to finish in the top eight in divisional scoring. Don Riviera (3-2), Rich Hutchinson (1-4), and Stan Delabbio (3-2) tied for ninth place as each player garnered five points.
The 50+ Elite team members were captain Kurt Grubner, Chris Delabbio, Don Riviera, Rich Hutchinson, Stan Delabbio, Darren Bauer, Randy Aimoe, Doug Menzies, John Cain, Mike Anton, Pat Dam, Mark Perry, Bob Sauve, Chuck Irwin, and managers Phil Parrinello and Rick Chauvin.
The 60+ Elite team that captured the 2008 World Cup title in a shootout fell by the same fate this year. The Sting defeated Oslo Oilers (Norway), 5-2, and Stockholm VIP (Sweden), 7-1, in pool play and earned a bye. The 60’s then blanked Oslo, 4-0, in the semifinals to reach its second straight World Cup championship game.
Andre VanOpdenbosh, the shoot out hero in 2008, led the Sting with four goals and two assists in four games and Boyette (3-1) and Arma Peddle (2-2) were team runners-up in scoring.
Team members included goalie Steve Roth, Terry Boyette, Andre VanOpdenbosh, Bill McCauley, Arma Peddle, Tom Woolsey, Gary Hamilton, Glen Hogan, John McLean, Dave Hands, Dennis Weinert, Tom Snyder, Mike Garrison, Ken Schaeffler, and managers Phil Parrinello and Rick Chauvin.
The Sting 55+ was the only club team not to reach a championship game as the squad fell, 5-1, to Les Boys of New Brunswick in the semifinals. Bruno Vit, a late addition from the Soo, scored the lone Sting marker assisted Steve Shannon with just 2:05 remaining in the game. Les Boys went on the championship game and lost 5-1 to the undefeated Toronto Warriors.
In pool play, the Sting 55+ team lost 3-2 to Les Boys, defeated the Global Oldtimers (England), 4-0, and knocked off the Florida Sons of Beaches, 7-2. The Sting also won a “friendly” game against the Flintstone Flyers (Scotland).
The 55+ team members were captain John Payotelis, goalie Brian Crankshaw, Tom Bommarito, Bruno Vit, John Wirtanen, Jim Krease, leading scorer Steve Shannon, Dan Shannon, Gary Fera, Mario Muzzin, John Schroder, Pat McGreevy, Dave Vorhes, Mike Sewick, and managers Phil Parrinello and Rick Chauvin.
