MICHIGAN STING WEEKLY UPDATE

SORRY ABOUT THE LATE PRESS RELEASE.
CURT WAS UP IN QUEBEC BATTLING THE CANADIAN ARMY
IN 3 SPIRITED HOCKEY GAMES.

JANUARY 31, 2012 – R LEAGUE

BRUINS 1 HAWKS 0
Rick Batchelder scores the games only goal and Bruno Tadolini keeps the Hawks off the scoreboard for a hard earned W.

STARS 6 HABS 4
Sam Cupp and John Zuccarini with deuces wild for the Stars. Tommy Trice and Pat Chimel with singles. Defenseman Howie Smith with 3 helpers. Jason Rockey(2), John Perini and sub Miller score for the Habs.

LEAFS 4 WINGS 2
The Leafs score twice in each period to upend the Wings. Dave Dybowski, Bruce Gooel, Al Platt and the ageless and indestructible George Gray tally for the Leafs. Leafs goaler Sir Kevin Bebbe with a workmanlike effort between the pipes. Steve’Barney Miller’Dietrich and Notre Dame High School alum Eddie Kowalczyk score for the Wings.

HAWKS 5 WINGS 1
After getting blanked in game one – the Hawks take out their frustration on Superman and the Wings in this penalty free game. Pat Collins with his first trick since he was a hot shot Junior player in the Shores. Jersey shore man sub Frontiera with the deuce. Big Eddie Kowalczyk with the lone Wings goal.

HABS 3 BRUINS 1
The French guys and goaler Dave Lescamela play an excellent game to upend the top spot Bruins. Jason Rockey, the bearded Steve Schwartz and sub Miller find the back of the net for the Habs. Will White with the Bruins tally.

LEAFS 4 STARS 2
The Leafs win their second 4-2 game of the night defeating the Stars in this game reminiscent of the bloody Good Friday massacre between the Habs and Nordics some 20 years ago. What a game that was! I remember Moose Dupont bleeding profusely – going to the bench for a towel – and then rejoining the battle! O.K. – back to the game in hand. The Leafs once again spread out the scoring with Dave Dybowski, Al Sparks and Bruce Gooel all scoring once again. Former General Motors employee Gary Butynski with a goal. Stars – John Zuccarini and sub Vinne’The Pooh’Sceglio. Stopper with an assist. Now the infractions – Stopper and Dave Dybowski both receive roughing minors. The Leafs Randy Debuel adds to his penalty minute total with roughing and high sticking minors in the same sequence with Vinnie ‘The Pooh’ who received slashing and roughing minors. Then – Debuel receives his third penalty of the game – cross checking with defenseman Howie Smith who received a slashing penalty. An anger management business card was offered to Debuel after the game by an unnamed player.

FEBRUARY 1, 2012 – A LEAGUE

LEAFS 4 HAWKS 2
The visiting Leafs defeat Lou Suvak’s reeling Hawks. Dan Caton, Steve Bittner, Don Riviera and Paul Polizzi score for the Leafs. Danny Rea and Mike Riddle tally for the Hawks.

BRUINS 3 STARS 2
The red hot Bruins upend the explosive Stars. Bruins goaler Brian Crankshaw stood on his head in this game. Rex Baker, Ward Peterson and Chuck Bowers score for the Bruins. Stud Trevor Wroble with both Stars goals.

HABS 5 WINGS 0
The Habs wreck carnage on sub goaler Frankie Schietaert and his Wing teammates. The big line of Bryan Prentice(1&3), John Cornish(2 goals) and Rob’Rickie’Middleton(1&3) accumulate 10 points in the game. Jeff Curan also with a marker. Dar with the whitewash. No Wings highlights in this penalty free contest.

STARS 7 HAWKS 4
The Stars crank it up and dismantle the Hawks in a wild and woolly shoot out. Trevor Wrobel and sub Mike Brown with 2 goals a piece. Singles for Rob Duff, Ryan Boyette and sub Kenny Karamon. Goaler Muddy chipped in with 2 helpers. Hawks – Chas Kipp(2), Steve Green and Jim Puffer.

BRUINS 3 WINGS 1
The Bruins jump into third place with a solid W over the Wings. Captain Edgar Atnip is doing a splendid coaching job behind the bench in this winning streak for the Bruins. Sub Joey’Sunshine’Ventimiglio with 2 goals for the Bruins. Kevin Mahon with a single. Frank’Crash’Casali with the only Wings goal of the night. Jeff Funk of the Bruins and Wings sub Paul Elsey both receive slashing minors and go to the box together. Rex Baker of the Bruins gets a 2 minute unsportsmanlike penalty – only to follow that up with a 10 minute same like penalty to hit the showers early.

HABS 9 LEAFS 3
Ouch! The first place Habs pound the Leafs for a doubleheader sweep in this penalty free game. Again the big line of Prentice(3&3), Cornish(2&2) and Middleton(2&2) do major damage. Tim Vaneckoute and John’The Russian Rocket’ Wirtanen with single goals. Defenseman Craig Maisonneuve with the hat trick assist. Leafs – Paul Polizzi, Mike Kruger and Dan Caton.

JANUARY 24, 2012 – R LEAGUE

LEAFS 5 HAWKS 4
Dave Dybowski sweeps down the wing and buries the game winner with 2 minutes left for the Leafs. Singles for Mike Ainsley, Joe Plati, and the Al’s – Platt and Sparks. Ronnie Meltsner accounted for all of the Hawks markers with 2&2. Pat Collins and sub Frontiera also score for the Hawks.

BRUINS 6 STARS 4
Mike Ala does what he does best – put the puck in the net! Ala with the trick for the Bruins. Singles for Rick Batchelder, Paul Giles and showing no ill effects from his ‘All Nighter” Saturday night at the “Commodore’s Ball” – Bugsy Watson. Stars – Kirk Havelock, John Zuccarini, Tommy Trice and Jim’Jacques’Lemire.

WINGS 5 HABS 2
Scott Shurin leads the Wings with 2 goals. Singles for Bennie Haynes, John O’Connell and sub Miller. "Superman" with a solid game between the pipes. Habs – John ’The Piranha’ Perini and Moncton call up ‘The Postmaster’ Al Snyder.

HAWKS 5 STARS 2
0-0 going into the final stanza – then 7 goals are scored in this penalty free contest. Once again the league’s leading scorer Ronnie Meltsner accounts for all of his team’s goals with 3 goals and 2 helpers. And – once again – Pat Collins and sub Frontiera also score for the Hawks. Kirk Havelock and Sam Cupp score for the Stars.

BRUINS 5 WINGS 2
Toght 2 - 2 game until final period when the can got opened. Top spot Bruins get a goal from Dave Walters 59 ticks into the game to set the tone. Mike Ala with the deuce. Singles for Drew Ballard and a tantalizing drive from the point from defenseman Mark Schoen. Again – Scott Shurin and Bennie Haynes light the lamp for the Wings.

HABS 2 LEAFS 2
Goalers Sir Kevin Bebbe and Dave Lescamela put on an old time Canadian puck stopping show, to the delight of the late arriving crowd. At press time - were still waiting for the crowd to arrive! The Postmaster – Al Snyder with both French goals. Likewise – Bruce Gooel with both Leafs goals.

JANUARY 26, 2012 – A LEAGUE

LEAFS 3 STARS 2
The Leafs score the only final period goal – for the game winner by Captain Jeff Ivory, who participated in all of his teams scoring – with also 2 assists. Dan Caton and Don Riviera also score Leaf goals. Goaler Billy Jr. with an assist on the game winner. Subs Chris Weinert and Mike Brown score for the Stars who were missing big gun Trevor Wrobel today. Trevor was checking out day care centers for his child. No penalties in the game.

BRUINS 4 HABS 3
John’Shifty’Shelton leads the Bruins with the trick. Big Rex Baker also scored. Bill Knight with 3 helpers. John Cornish, Doug Roehl and sub Barker score French goals. The Habs were minus their 2 big guns Tim Vanekoute and Bryan Prenitce(another Caribbean vacation). No penalties in the game.

HAWKS 5 WINGS 3
All the early games today had no trips to the sin bin – what’s up with that? Especially unusual for the rambunctious Hawks. The big guns – Danny Rea and Mike Riddle with deuces wild for the Hawks. Sub Ernie Baum with a slap shot single goal. Frank’Crash’Casali, Al Pyc and shades of the Big M – Frank Maholvich – JP - the Wings goal scorers.

LEAFS 3 BRUINS 0
Goaler Billy Mac Jr. spins the whitewash on the frustrated Bruins. Red hot Jeff Ivory with 2 goals. Sub Steve Shannon also scored. Again – Billy Mac with an assist. No Bruins highlights.

HAWKS 4 HABS 3
The Hawks send the French guys to a double dip defeat. Rockford call up Ernie Baum leads the way with 2 goals. Singles for Scott Leslie and fellow Rockford call up Timmy O’Dea. Habs – John Cornish, Rob Middleton and defenseman Craig Maisonneuve. Middleton received an abuse of officials penalty late in the game to hamper his teams comeback attempt. The Hawks Jim Leonardi received an unsportsmanlike penalty early in the game. So much for the good will in the 3 early games.

STARS 4 WINGS 1
Sub Mike Brown scores twice for the Stars to send them only 2 points back of the Habs for the top spot in the standings. Robert Duff and Dana Boyette also score. Goaler Muddy with a stellar game in nets. Grand Rapids call up Joey’Sunshine’Ventimiglio with the lone Wings tally.

4 WEEKS UNTIL PLAY OFFS
CANADIENS IN FIRST PLACE BY 4 POINTS OVER STARS. BETWEEN CANADIENS AND STARS.
NO OTHER CONTENDERS FOR SECOND HALF FIRST PLACE POSITION.

STARS 7 HAWKS 3
The Stars beat up on Lou Suvak’s reeling squad. At last weeks trade deadline meeting which lasted over 2 hours – Captain Lou was unable to swing a trade for his team. Lou left the meeting in acrimonious fashion. The story of this game was veteran Jerry Ferranti who recorded the trick. Jerry – who has numerous scoring titles to his credit over his some 50 years of hockey, is now fifth in the scoring race! We will not mention that Trevor Wrobel is his center. Singles for Wrobel, Rob Duff, Eddie’The Hawk’Higgins and sub Brown. The Hawks receive goals from Lou Suvak, Walt Kitchen and sub Chris Weinert. Hawks defenseman Jim Puffer was a little frisky with a double minor roughing penalty.

BRUINS WINGS – West coast game – no results except we have heard the Bruins prevailed.

LEAFS 3 HABS 2
The Leafs respond to an impassioned pregame pep talk from Captain Jeff Ivory to upend the top spot Habs in this penalty free game. Steve Bittner and subs Ernie Baum and Dom Tringali score for the Leafs. Goaler Billy Mac Jr. with a strong game in nets. Bryan Prentice and trade acquisition Doug Roehl find the back of the net for the Habs.

BRUINS 4 HAWKS 2
The Bruins sweep their second doubleheader in a row without injured Captain Edgar Atnip. Hmmm. John’Shifty’Shelton with the deuce. Singles for Chuck Bowers and ‘The Funkster’. Hawks – Danny Rea and Steve Green. But the storyline of this game was the interaction of Walt Kitchen and Kevin Mahon. After taking turns of slashing, spearing and finally a roundhouse punch by Mahon – both parties adjourn to the sin bin with double roughing minors. Mahon’s girlfriend in the stands MaryAnn released a few expletives at Mr. Kitchen’s way. You gotta love hockey!
WINGS LEAFS – Another late game on the coast – no results.

HABS 5 STARS 2
The Frenchmen defeat the Stars for the second time in a row behind the spectacular goaltending of Dar and their balanced scoring attack. Habs – Rob’Rickie’Middledton, Bryan Prentice, John Cornish, Tim Vaneckoute and Billy Mack(Empty Net). Defenseman ‘The Russian Rocket’ John Wirtanen with 3 helpers. Trevor Wrobel and sub Brown score for the Stars.

Who was the last player of the ‘Original Six’ to retire? Hint – He wore #12.

HABS 5 STARS 4

HABS 4 HAWKS 2

HAWKS 3 LEAFS 0
The Hawks send the Leafs to their second consecutive scoreless game of the night. Could mastermind Jeff Ivory be posturing for a favorable trade for his team at tonight’s trade powwow? Stay tuned. Scott Leslie(2) and Chas Kipp score for the Hawks.

BRUINS 4 STARS 3
An upset of epic proportions! Oft injured Captain Edgar Atnip who was behind the bench, has spurred the Bruins to a rare doubleheader sweep. Big Rex Baker had a hand in all the scoring – 1 goal and 3 helpers. Billy Bradford, Chuck Bowers and Providence call up Bob’Bugsy’Watson also score. Bowers beat Muddy short side on the game winning goal. “My fault” Muddy said. Again - sub goaler Billy Schaugg with a solid game in nets. But – the Stars do set a new Sting league record with the fastest short handed goal to start a game. Jerry Ferranti goes to the box for a slash 12 seconds in. 10 seconds later – at the 22 second mark – Trevor Wrobel scores the games first goal. Terry Boyette scores 2 more Stars goals – but to no avail.

HABS 4 WINGS 4
Grand Rapids call up John Nasuti puts the Wings up 4-3 with 6 minutes left in the game. 19 seconds later Bryan Prentice of the Habs ties it up to procure 1 point for each team. Mickey Moore, Norm Foster and sub Todd Brown also score for the Wings. John Cornish(2) and Tim Vaneckoute the French goal scorers. Defenseman Craig Maisoneuve with 3 helpers.
