“R” LEAGUE WEEKLY UPDATE – FEBRUARY 7, 2017

BRUINS    3    WINGS   1

The Bruins jump out to a 3 zip lead behind goals from Al Sparks and subs “Fred” Lynn and Steve Lemieux.  Goaltender Bobby Rutkoske was his usual solid self in nets.  Cam “Steamboat” Lawrence was the only Wing to solve Rutkoske, as he buries a bad angle top shelf goal.  No trips to the sin bin for either squad.

FLYERS    5    HAWKS   3

The Flyers score twice on the games first shift as they defeat the Hawks.  Mike Ala with the deuce.  Singles for John Zuccarini, Al Platt and Bruce “Cooler Man” Gooel. Adam Oats clone – Pat Collins with the hat trick assist.  “Gentleman” Don Courtley bats in a couple of rebound goals and the ever reliable James George tally for the Hawks.

SHARKS    6    HABS    2

Jimmy “Boog” Powell scores three consecutive goals as the Sharks smoke the Habs.  Boog was on fire this game, as opposing goalie Sir Kevin Beebe could be seen muttering expletives after his third goal!  The dispassionate Kevin Mahon(2) and sub Higgins also found the back of the net.  Jeff “Dick”Tracy and sub “Mike” Phipps tally for the Habs.  Hard to believe – but the Habs Chris Zanke picks up a roughing minor penalty, as he and Mark Nuss both incur roughing minors in the final minute of this lopsided affair.

HABS   3    FLYERS   1

Shades of Bobby – as the Habs Steve Orr goes end to end as he weaves his way through the entire Flyers team for the game winning goal!  Mike Lawson and sub “Mike” Phipps also with Habs markers.  Puck stopper Sir Kevin Beebe was simply outstanding in this game!  On another end to end rush – John Zuccarini with the lone Flyers goal.  The Flyers enter the final week of the season three points up on the Sharks for the top spot in the second half standings.  Both teams play each other in game one next week.  It should be interesting!  Arrive early to get a good seat!

WINGS   2     SHARKS    2

All the games scoring is accomplished in the initial period, as both goaltenders Mike Schilmgen and Sharks sub Rick “Ticker” Chauvin shine in nets.  Marty Sell with the deuce for the Wings as they remain winless in their last eight games.  Subs “Magnum” Higgins and and Chilean import Churilla score for the Fish in this penalty free game.

BRUINS    5    HAWKS   3

Can’t catch this!  Speedy sub Steve “Mario” Lemieux records the trick for the Bruins.  Singles for Adam Godard and once again sub “Freddy” Lynn.  Hawks – Brian Belloli(2) and who else – James George.

Who was the 1967 expansion L.A. Kings first head coach?

Hint – a former Red Wings and HOF player.
