THE “A” SAM CUPP CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!

STARS   4     WINGS   3 – OT

Wow!  This is just the way it should be!  Talk about an even and exciting hockey game!  The Stars battle back from a late 3-1 deficit to tie it up 3-3, only to see the game go scoreless in a five minute overtime and resulting in shootout trickery and only one goal scorer in ten shooters!

If you looked hard enough into the rafter’s in Arena three – you could probably see Sam Cupp smiling!

Wings point machine John McNeilly scores his first of two goals on his second shift of the game.  Wings defenseman Dana Boyette unloads a cannon shot from the point to put the Wings up two zip.  Stars center Joey Reiss cuts the deficit in half at the five minute mark of the third period.

3-1 Wings – then Mike “King of the Road” Miller scores with just under 5 minutes left in the game to make the score 3-2.  Stars rushing defenseman Danny Rea unleashes a powerful backhand just inside the goal post to tie the game up 3-3!

No one scores in the 5 minute overtime despite numerous chances, only to be foiled by the outstanding net minding of Billy Schaugg and Dar!

Now the fun and trickery I mentioned earlier starts.

5 man shoot out for each team.

The Stars shoot first using what appeared to be sub defenseman Dave Wilson, but Mike Miller switched helmets with Dave to make it look like Dave was the shooter.  Dave has the distinctive old yellow Grosse Pointe North helmet, given to him from former North coach Scott Lock.

Bottom line – out of 10 shooters – Joey Reiss of the Stars was the only player to find the back of the net and propel the Stars to the Sam Cupp Championship!

MVP Stars goalie Billy Schaugg was excellent throughout the game and in the shootout as he stoned all five shooters.

A nice final sendoff to the Stars franchise, as they head East to be renamed the Flyers!
Who is the first US born NHL player to reach three consecutive 100 point seasons?
