A BLAST FROM THE PAST!

FOR ALL YOU OLD-TIME EAST SIDERS YOU WILL ENJOY THIS!

HEILMAN’S ICE RINK WHERE I FIRST STARTED PLAYING HOCKEY IN 1964.

YOU CAN SEE BURBANK GRADE SCHOOL IN THE BACKGROUND.

YES – YOUNGSTERS – THERE WAS OUTDOOR HOCKEY BEFORE THE WINTER CLASSIC’S!

PREGAME SHOVELING AND SKATING AGAINST THE WIND – SOMETIMES NOT TOO MUCH FUN!

HAD LUNCH WITH A DENBY HIGH SCHOOL BUDDY I HAVEN’T SEEN IN 50 YEARS AT JOE KOOLS LAST WEEK!

HE STILL HAS THE ABOVE ITEMS IN HIS GARAGE!

BAUER SUPREMES AND A COVETED VETEREE HARDWARD HOCKEY BAG – PRICELESS!

VETEREE’S WAS THE GO-TO HOCKEY STORE ON THE EAST SIDE.

LOCATED ON SEVEN MILE JUST EAST OF HAYES.

NOW THE MOST DANGEROUS AREA IN DETROIT!

SHARKS   4   WINGS   1

Da Sharks continue their winning streak on the back of stingy goalie Brian Miller!  Sub Matt Lawson with a two goal game.  Fellow sub Ken Debus and reverting back to playing on the outside hockey rink on Detroit’s east side, called Farwell Field – “Black” Jack Priaux with singles.  Captain Steve Dietrich with the hat trick assist.  Dad Mike Lawson with the Wings marker.

HABS   5    FLYERS   1

Mike Ala with the tour du chapeau for the Frenchmen!  Singles for Kenny Wilkins and winger Rick Batchelder.  A strong game in nets for “Ticker” Chauvin.  Jimmy George with the lone Flyers goal.  Jimmy George(Roughing) and John Dooley(Slashing) of the Habs commiserate in the box together.

HAWKS   5    BRUINS   2

Complete domination this game, as the Hawks beautifully execute their pregame strategy.  “Shut down Lemieux and you shut down the Bruins!”  Captain Mark Smyth blanketed Lemieux all game as his line also pitched in with three goals to boot!  Power winger and former Indy race car driver(His Car Below) Jeff Morton with the deuce.  Line-mate Sammy “The Bull” Bonanno with a breakaway backhand goal.  Brian Belloli and Chuck Bowers also with goals.  Hawks injured goalie Tommy Gazley was at the game and was quoted as saying “These guys never scored this much when I was in nets!”  Doug Wargo and Chuck Mouraine tally for the Bruins.  First half scoring leading Mouraine self admittedly has sort of been struggling to put the puck into the net in the second half.  So, as a kind gesture, his line-mate fished the puck out of the net on his goal and presented it to him!  This was a penalty free game.

HAWKS   2    WINGS   1

Mark Smyth scores two final period goals as the rising Hawks sweep today!  Sub goalie Billy Papciak with another outstanding game in nets!  Doug “Jeff” Beck with the Wings goal as they only score one goal in each game today.  Bob Watson of the Wings injured his arm and had to leave the game.  Hawks enforcer Jeff Morton and Wings goalie Dave Gaskey get into an altercation and Morton was pushed away by his line-mate.  “Dude – you are on double secret probation – are you crazy – stay away!”  This was a penalty free game.

FLYERS   7    SHARKS   4

The Flyers unceremoniously snap the Sharks win streak!  Deuces wild for the league’s leading scorer Bob Stempian and sub Larry “School Boy” Rowe.  Jimmy George, Kevin Maguire(PP) and the second best 11 in the league, Kenny Perko also score for the Flyers.  Unaccustomed to letting many pucks behind him this second half – Sharks goalie Brian Miller was seen muttering something in the corner after one of the goals.  Sharks – Ben Haynes, Todd Schurman, Jim Chapie and sub Matt Lawson.  Sub “Freddy” Lynn with three helpers.

BRUINS   2     HABS   1

The Bruins recover from their game one pasting behind the stellar net-minding of Mike Schlimgen.  Bo Altherr and never missing a breakaway that I have seen – sub John Higgins with the Bruins goals.  Defenseman Dougie Roehl with two tape to tape assists.  Mike Ala with the Habs late marker.  Steve Lemieux of the Bruins with a solo roughing minor penalty.
