PLAYOFFS – WEEK  4

WINGS    2    FLYERS   1

Huge game for the third place Flyers!  They needed this game!  Didn’t happen!  Wings subs Matt Lawson and Boice score in the final period to erase a 1-0 Flyers lead and secure the W!  Sub goalie Superman shined in nets!  Flyers sub Scott Leslie with their lone marker.

HABS   3     SHARKS    3

Da Sharks pick up their first point of the playoffs, as sub Dougie Roehl ties the game up with just over three minutes left in the contest!  Eddie “The Eagle” Higgins and Al Phipps with singles.  Mike Lawson and Sharks subs Dave Rupprecht and Steve Lambert tally for the Frenchmen.

HAWKS    5    BRUINS   2

The Hawks get revenge from their last playoff meeting with the Bruins.  Line-mates Billy Hagen(Hat Trick) and Mark Smyth(2 & 3) do the scoring for the Hawks.  Steve Lemieux and back from his two week Florida vacation – Bobby Watson score for the Bruins.

This is pretty cool regarding the picture below.   Opponents today – Brian Gross of the Bruins and sub Larry Rowe of the Hawks grew up playing hockey together since their were pee-wee’s!  Captain Larry Rowe is top row fourth from the left.  Assistant Captain Brian Gross is kneeling far right along with his Dad standing next to him in this picture when they were playing midgets for Royal Oak.  Gotta love it!

FLYERS    2       HAWKS   2

The marquee game of the night!  Flyers looking pretty good up 2-0 entering the final stanza.  Then Brian Belloli and sub Larry “School Boy” Rowe score for the second place Hawks as the game ends in a tie.  Chuck Mouraine and sub Paul “Brett Michaels” Vioalssi tally for the Flyers.  Both goalies – Bobby Rutkoske of the Flyers and Brian Miller of the Hawks with excellent games in nets!  The Flyers definitely could have used a W in this game as they are now three points behind the Hawks with two games left in the playoffs.  The Flyers need to sweep next week and as Joe Cocker would say, they need a little help from their friends.  This was a chippy affair, as both teams racked up four penalties.  Flyers captain Ryan O’Rourke had a head start to the cooler, as he picks up his third penalty of the game late in the final period.

SHARKS    6    BRUINS   3

The Sharks pick up their first point of the playoffs in game one – now they pick up their first win of the playoffs in game two!  Super sub defenseman Dougie Roehl with the hat trick!  All three goals were lasers from the point!  Fellow sub John “Magnum” Higgins with the deuce.  Masked man Joe Plati bangs in a rebound.  Sniper Ronnie Meltsner(2) and Keith Lutz on a breakaway tally for the Bruins, who folded like a cheap tent the past two weeks and are now history in the playoffs!  This was a penalty free game.

WINGS   2      HABS   0

Can we say this was a SHRIMP game!  Sub Superman with the well earned shutout as he should fulfill his shutout shrimp promise next week!  Cam Lawrence and sub Matt Dawson tally in the final period for the Wings, who have sewed up their appearance in the Sam Cupp Championship game!  No Habs highlights.

True or false.
Did Wayne Gretzky ever play for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds?
Scroll down for the answer.
True!
At age 16 Wayne played for the Greyhounds.
That was the first time he wore number 99!
He wanted to wear number 9 in honor of Gordie, but another player had it.
