“R” LEAGUE

SHARKS    4    HAWKS   3

The Sharks win their inaugural game as they defeat the Hawks.  Winning Sharks goalie Stopper was elated as he says: “Isn’t that something – I win the first game played at the Detroit Skating Club and now for the Sharks!”  The Sharks spread the wealth as Joe Plati, Kevin Mahon, Ben Haynes and Steve Dietrich find the back of the net.  Mark Smyth, and subs Al Pyc and Lawson tally for the Hawks.

BRUINS   2   FLYERS   1

The Bruins score twice in the final period as they eke out a tight defensive victory.  Adam Godard score 37 ticks into the final period to tie the game 1-1.  Then Bob ‘Bugsy” Watson goes top shelf for the Bruins game winner! Smooth skating John Zucchini with the lone Flyer tally.  Both goaltenders – Bobby Rutkoske and Mike Mostyn put on a show for the empty arena!

WINGS   3    HABS   1

Three goals and three penalties is the prefect mix for the Wings.  Mike Charison, Marty Sell and Rob “The Rifleman” Duncan score for the Wings.  Goaler Rick ‘Ticker” Chauvin was stellar in nets.  Mike Lawson was the only Hab to solve Chauvin.

FLYERS   6   HAWKS   0

I like this new Flyers team as they demolish the Hawks in game two.  Mr. Pat Collins with a huge 4 goal game!  Singles for Bruce Gooel and “One Skate” Jimmy Sauter.  Mike Ala with the hat trick assist.  Mike Mostyn with the light load shutout.  No Hawks highlights as they drop a deuce today.

WINGS    4    BRUINS   2

The Wings sweep for the day behind the steady puck stopping Rick Chauvin.  The Wings number one pick Cam “Steamboat” Lawrence lives up to his billing – with a two goal game.  Singles for Paulie “Jay” Giles and Marty Sell, who also contributed three helpers.  Bob “Bugsy” Watson with both Bruins tallies – the second one of the shorthanded variety.

SHARKS   3    HABS   2

Habs up two zip entering the final stanza.  Da Sharks tally three final period goals to take a deuce today!  Eddie “The Eagle” Higgins with the power play game winning goal.  Jimmy “Boog” Powell and sub B. Westenberg with singles.  Looking 20 years younger – goaltender Stopper with a solid effort on nets.  Jeff “Dick” Tracy and once again Mike Lawson score for the Frenchmen.

Which of these defenseman never won the Norris Trophy?
Brad Park, Rod Langway, Doug Wilson, Chris Chelios.
