THE SAM CUPP “R” CHAMPIONSHIP

STARS   7     WINGS   2

2-2 at the end of the first period.  Then the Stars rattle off five unanswered goals to win their second consecutive Sam Cupp Championship!  Game MVP – Stars goalie Bobby Rutkoske stood on his proverbial head, as he foiled the high octane Wings – time after time!  The Stars were able to solve Wings sub goaltender Rick ‘Ticker” Chauvin, who was outstanding in the round robin playoff rounds.  Mark Smyth came up big with a huge five point game – the trick and two helpers!  Singles for Eddie “The Eagle” Higgins, Ronnie Meltsner and former Notre Dame High Schooler – “Motor City” Eddie Kowalczyk.  Eddie says: “What a way to start the week!  Drink from the Sam Cupp – then attend the Hamtramck Festival this weekend!”  Chuck Moraine and Marty Sell were the Wings marksman.  Stars Captain Howard Smith says his job is done, as he heads off to Florida for the winter.

The Stars will now disband and head to the East to be renamed the Flyers.

‘R’ FALL SEASON PREVIEW

THE ‘R’ LEAGUE LOOKS VERY BALANCED THIS YEAR!

HAWKS

Nice team – they will score plenty of goals and prevent them.

BRUINS

Another nice squad. Love the defense. Offense will produce and of course goalie Bobby Rutkoske is always strong in nets.

HABS

A very different French team than past years. Only Jeff Tracy returns to Captain Kenny Wilkins team from years past. I like the offense. This team will get plenty of penalty killing experience, with the likes of Joe Grusling and Chris Zanke patrolling the blue line!

WINGS

Strong defense – offense could be a little suspect. Goaler Mike Schilmgen is an unknown to me.

FLYERS

Very strong team. Could be the team to beat! The goalie is solid – along with a very strong offense and defense. Three nice playmakers up front with Mike Ala, Bruce Gooel and Pat Collins and don’t forget defenseman John Zucchini who can rush the puck at will.

SHARKS

This team will put the puck in the net. They have a strong positive veteran presence on defense. A lot to like with this team.
