WEEK THREE – PLAYOFFS

HABS   5    FLYERS   3

Mike Ala completes his hat trick with an empty netter as the host Habs defeat the Flyers.  Kenny Wilkins and Marty Sell also score for the Frenchmen.  General Robert E. Lee, Bruce Gooel and sub Jeff “Dick” Tracy tally for the Flyers.

SHARKS   3     HAWKS   2

The battle for the top spot did not disappoint the one fan in attendance!  The Hawks score twice in a 30 second span to tie the game up 2-2 with just five minutes remaining in the game.  Then Eddie “The Eagle” Higgins converts on a power play, to give the Sharks the hard fought W!  Steve Dietrich with a very nice top shelf rebound goal.  Playing a very strong overall game – Ronnie Meltsner also with a rebound goal.  After getting lit up like a Christmas tree last time sub goalie Brian Miller faced the Hawks – he turned the tables this time and denied at least three breakaways!  Nice job Brian!  Robbie “Hurricane” Halhuber with both Hawks goals.

BRUINS   5    WINGS   1

Subbing for Steve Lemieux today – Paul “Brett Michaels” Violassi with the hat trick!  Singles for Dougie Wargo and Brian Belloli.  Goaler Bobby Rutkoske displayed his usual strong game in nets.  No trips to the sin bin for either team.

BRUINS   3    HABS   1

The second place Bruins sweep for the second consecutive week behind the outstanding net-minding of Bobby Rutkoske!  Brian Belloi, Chuck Mouraine(EN) and sub Paul Vioalassi score for the men in yellow.  Sub Matt Lawson with the Habs lone goal.

HAWKS   3     WINGS   3

These two teams tie in their third straight meeting!  This was a tough tie for the Wings!  Hawks sub Kevin “Jerry” Maguire was left all alone in front of the Wings net with the Hawks goalie pulled, buries the game tying goal with just under a minute to play!  How Maguire was that open, at that critical time, was very hard to believe!  Robbie Halhuber and returning from his lengthy DL stint with an upper body injury – Curt Bailey round out the Hawks scoring.  Bo Altherr and the Al’s – Pyc and Phipps score for the Wings.  Both goalies – Al Rice for the Hawks and Mike Schlimgen of the Wings were strong between the pipes in this penalty free game.

SHARKS   7     FLYERS   1

Upon this games completion, rink manager Zach Wagner leaves his office to investigate this strange noise he hears coming from the lobby.  He sees this faint silhouette of a fat lady(Kate Smith?) singing quietly by the concession area.  The playoff winless Flyers are not officially eliminated from the Sam Cupp Championship as of yet –  but the fat lady is definitely starting to sing!  Deuces wild for Eddie Higgins and Ben Haynes.  Singles for Benny Hudson, Steve Dietrich and sub Debus Debus(Also 3 helpers).  Sub goaler Brian Miller with an easy ten save game.  General Lee with the Flyers only marker.  Frustrated Flyers defenseman Pete Gibb picks up a solo roughing minor penalty.

What was the name of the famed Montreal Canadians national anthem singer in the 70’s, who implemented the anthem in French and English?
